Lava Lamps

Yesterday I made two lava lamps in a jar. I made a gliter one and a food colouring one.

How to make the food colouring lava lamp: Fill up most of the jar with veggitable oil, leaving some room at the top to put some water in it.  Add little drops of your choice food colouring. I chose blue.

How to make the glitter lava lamp: Add enough vegitable oil to fill up the bottom of your surfuse. Then fill the rest of it up with water. Add what ever glitter you want. I added silver, purple, dark blue, light blue, pink, and gold.

  1. Hey Eartha, I've never seen this before. For the glitter one, is it only glitter and water, or is there something else added that makes the glitter clump together.
Also if you shake it does the glitter separate and how long does it take to starting joining up again?
Also... if you are keen, you could sign up for Science Badges, I've got spme marine biology activities you could start at home during lockdown here

  2. Hi Mr eggmond. You probably haven't seen this before because I made it up. The vegitable oil is what makes it stay together. when I shack it it turns into little bubbles of glitter (but not all seperated) then starts to form a big clump of glitter. The bigger shake the more time you can watch it spin around in circles. But from my calculations it takes about 9 secounds to start joining up again. JOKE TIME: My wife said I should do lunges to stay in shape. That would be a big step forward.

I named my glitter lava lamp JONNY.
I named the food colouring lava lamp JIMMY
